Sweden + hard rock that harkens back to the genre’s roots = there ain’t nothing better.
There is something about the Scandis that when they choose to play something akin to classic rock, they never disappoint. Take Graveyard, for example, whose sound draws heavily from stoner and hard rock, as well as blues, and whose style is layered with thick riffs and a hearty dose of melancholy that can only be dealt by a Northern hand.
Retro, but without riding on the back of what already has been done, Graveyard’s sound centres nostalgia in just the right way.
History:
Joakim Nilsson has fronted Graveyard since the band’s formation in Gothenburg in 2006. From a very early stage, the band’s frontman set the stylistic tone that the band has been emulating since.
Their 2007 debut self-titled album, released under Tee Pee Records, caused enough of a stir that not long after its release, the band was signed by the German phonographic giant, Nuclear Blast.
From that moment on the band was on the rise, reaching another breakthrough with their sophomore album, “Hisingen Blues”. It was this record that saw the group’s reflective yet punchy hard rock come into its own, rightfully claiming its status as one of the most interesting vintage phenomena in Scandinavian rock.
Though years have passed, the band’s reputation remains strong, as does their creative appetite. Their latest record, 6 from 2023, presents an even more introspective Graveyard, pensive and calm, and yet gloomier than ever before.
